Sharing in a child’s joy is not the same as using a verbal reward. One focuses on a child’s thoughts, feelings, and accomplishments. The other focuses on your thoughts, feelings, and wants and diminishes how the child views their own thoughts and feelings and own self-worth (self-worth is not the same as self-esteem).
